چکیده

The versatile nucleophilic organic catalysts N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have been shown to effectively mediate the transesterification of phosphorus esters under mild conditions; user-friendly imidazolium salts can also be employed as pre-catalysts.

Asymmetric borylation of α,β-unsaturated esters catalyzed by novel ring expanded N-heterocyclic carbenes based on chiral 3,4-dihydro-quinazolinium compounds.

A series of chiral 6-membered ring N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) precursors based on 3,4-dihydro-quinazoline were synthesized with overall yields of 54-62%. NHCs generated from these precursors show excellent asymmetric catalytic properties for borylation of α,β-unsaturated esters with enantioselectivity of up to 93% with a catalyst content of only 1 mol%.

Synthesis of unsymmetrical N-carboranyl NHCs: directing effect of the carborane anion.

The syntheses of unsymmetrical N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) that contain a single N-bound icosahedral carborane anion substituent are reported. Both anionic C-2 and doubly deprotonated dianionic C-2/C-5 NHC lithium complexes are isolated. The latter species is formed selectively, which reveals a surprising directing effect conveyed by icosahedral carborane anion substituents.
